OELP Reflections (WeiNing)

OELP Reflections:

Why did you choose to go on this trip? What decisions were made when you choose to go on this trip? What you hope to learn from this trip?

What is one situation you came across that you feel strongly about? Who is one person that you had seen that taught you more than what could be achieved in class? What is one fact that you had learnt during the trip that impacted you the most?

How would this trip affect your future behaviors and attitudes? What are some long term changes you hope will take place? What did you learn in this trip that you can bring back to Singapore?

Is Merlion the most suitable icon of Singapore? (WeiNing)

No, I do not think  that the Melion is the most suitable icon of a singapore. It is true that the Merlion was founded due to the fact that Sang Nila Utamaro first saw a lion when he stepped foot in Singapore and since Singaproe was still a fishing village then, Merlion was then introduced as the icon of Singapore.

However,, in my perspective, I do not think that the Merlion is the most suitable icon of a Singapore. The most suitable icon should be referred as one thing which makes everyone in the world know who we are. But the thing is, most foreigners in other countries do not recognise Singapore by the Merlion, they recognise us by our unique language of Singlish. People know we are Singaporeans, just by hearing how we communicate with others.

The Merlion is a perfect despiction of our past, however, not our present and future. The Merlion situated in Singapore is just a famous tourist attraction which is visited by many people. However, that just makes the Merlion the 'most famous tourist attraction in Singapore', but not the best icon for us.

Thus, I do not think that the Merlion is the most suitable icon of Singapore as it only is a famous tourist attraction, a landmark for tourists to visit.

Golden Age of Singapore (WeiNing)

If behind every successful man stands a woman, behind every successful man ha a great leader. Mr Lee Kuan Yew is the great leader of our small yet successful nation, Singapore. Without Mr Lee, there wouldn't be the Singapore we all are proud of now.

Mr Lee is the founding father of our tiny nation, he led Singapore through all the obstacles she has to go through to where she is today. Everyone is deeply saddened by the news of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's passing on Monday, 23 March 2015. He has passed away peacefully in Singapore General Hospital at the age of 91.

Throughout the one week of mourning for Mr Lee, every Singaporean and even foreigners were saddened, many people queued up at the parliament house to pay our last respects for this great man.
Everyone who queued knew that the wait would only end in 2-12 hours, depending on the day and time of those who queued. However, many still came forward to pay their last respects. He was a man, worthy of 12 hours of wait. He was a man, worthy of an off day at work. He was a man, worthy of every other leader in the world's time to come down personally to pay their respects to him. He was a noble leader.

Mr Lee spent the time of his entire life, to build on Singapore. We were just a red dot on the big map of the world with no natural resources, but, under his leadership, we rose into a first-world nation from a small fishing village in less than 40 years. From the time he stepped up as the Prime Minister to lead Singapore in 1959, he never gave up. There were times when we met with many difficulties, like the separation from Malaysia in 1963, but even after we were separated from Malaysia, as our very own Singapore, he did not give up. With all he can, he led Singapore into the world. He was determined in building Singapore into a clean and green city. Mr Lee initiated the cleaning campaign to clean up the Singapore River, which was a dirty sewage at that time. Mr Lee also wanted to encourage the idea of a green city and to bond Singaporeans, he personally planted a tree, and did this without fail every year even after he retired as the Senior Prime Minister until recent years when his health was deteriorating.

Mr Lee was the future of Singapore, he was a man with great foresight. He was worried that Singapore would not succeed without a strong military force, thus he set down a rule where all boys, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents 18 of age were to enlist as a military soldier in the army. Also, Mr Lee also worked on the efficiency of transport in Singapore, the MRT system and bus services. With HDB flats all over Singapore , poverty is greatly reduced with everyone having a cosy house to live in , and different ways to increase water supply ensured enough clean drinking water for everyone.Other than working hard domestically, Mr Lee also ventured out into the world and improved relations of Singapore with other countries. This could not have been achieved without MR Lee.

Without the hard work of Mr Lee throughout the years, Singapore would not have been able to achieve what she is today. "The Golden Age of Singapore" is now. This golden age was built up and created by Mr Lee, without him, there wouldn't be a first-world Singapore, The education system here in Singapore i one of the best in the world, because Mr Lee stresses that every child in Singapore has the rights to be educated. Singapore is at her peak now that we are approaching our 50th year, there would not be a "golden age" for us without him. He is the founding father of our nation.

However, we all know that without the hard work of the future generations to come, Singapore would not rise anymore. We have to keep the legacy of Mr Lee living even though he has left us. As the future generations of Singapore, we need to take the responsibility into our own hands and push the limits of the developments of Singapore. The only way to not disappoint Mr Lee is to live up to Singapore's reputation and live the legacy he created.

"What have I gotten at the end of the day?
A Successful Singapore.
What have I given up?
My Life"

-Mr Lee Kuan Yew

China's Economic Growth (WeiNing)

China has been developing their country rapidly in the recent years. It used to be one of the poorest countries i the world and it is now growing very quickly. China will continue to grow a develop their trading business, develop their infrastructure and many other projects as years pass. It will turn into a very prosperous country and one of the leading countries soon as well. Due to China's low coporate tax, which is 25%, they attract foreign investors to the country to do business. This allows China to be more developed with foreign investors. Also, China's low exchange rate will attract more tourists and foreigners to visit China. China's goods are mass produced and due to their cheap labour, the goods sold are thus cheaper in price as well.

However, the increase in income inequality in China will result in the country being richer but yet the people in China are becoming poorer and poorer. The rich gets richer, the poor gets poorer. In China itself, there will be more employment opportunities as more workers will be needed should more factories be built by foreign investors. But as more factories are being built, more pollution will be caused especially air pollution. One god example is the city of Beijing, the air pollution in Beijing is so bad that there's no one day with clear blue skies.

With China's rapid economic growth over the years, many countries start to trade with China, including Singapore. Our country should maintain on friendly terms with China so as continue trading with them. Without the trade from China, our country may not be able to survive on our own due to our lack of natural resources.

1 Child Policy (WeiNing)

From the last cid lesson, we were introduced to China's one-child policy. This policy states that each pair of married couple is only allowed to give birth to one child, if the first child is a girl, they are then allowed to have another child. However, if the second child is also a girl, they are not allowed to give birth to anyore children. This policy may be useful in China's case as it sucessfully helped the country to decrease in population. However, i find that such a policy will not be sucessful in Singapore. With Singapore's declining fetility rate, the population rate of Singaporeans are declining as well. Thus, since we are declining in Singapore's population, the amount of manpower is decreasing too which results in the increasing number of foreign workers in Singapore. Many couples have only one or two children and some do not even wish to give birth at all. It is really worrying as the child needs to take up a lot of responsibility as the only child to support his/her parents. Thus, Singapore should encourage Singaporean women to give birth so as to increase the birth rate in Singapore to build a better nation with more young talents to aid in society.

Poverty (WeiNing)

18.01.2015

This post is about my thoughts on the cid lesson about poverty. We were showed two different images: the first image is about a male beggar with a cardboard stating that he is very poor and has no money. His valuables had been stolen and needed money to phone a call. The other image is about a lady carrying a young child, begging for money from a male passerby. The question given to us is who would we give a sole dollar we own to. Even after knowing the two's background, I still chose to give neither of them. I chose not to give. Who knows what might happen after you give this dollar? And, would this dollar really make a significant difference? I may seem inhumane but I would rather not give than to give one of them. The only time I would give them a dollar is when i have two try and when I can hand them one dollar each. Whenever i face such people, I always try to avoid them. to be very honest, it has never crossed my mind that I should give them money. Rather than money, I would rather choose to give necessities like food, clothes or anything else but money.
This is my honest opinion and view regarding the beggars and their background. However, even though I choose not to give either of them, I realised that what we might see may not be the truth. The image is just the surface, but most importantly we need to look beneath the surface. Do not conclude what you may see for the first time, learn more and find out more before getting to to conclusion.

fatning :)

Holidays (WeiNing)

18.01.2015

The holidays felt like it went past really quickly, although we actually had a whole two months to enjoy and relax after the stressful eoys. During the holidays, I spent most of my days in school, having badminton trainings. It was tough yet satisfying, and since we all knew that competition was starting as soon as school starts, we were all very worried about it too. After many weeks of training, I finally head on to my adventure in Europe. I travelled to three countries in the Europe continent, Italy, Switzerland and France. I had many "first times" in Europe. First time riding a Segway roaming about in the streets of Florence, first time running off a cliff, first time being on a parachute and many more. The parachuting was the most memorable one was parchuting. Because we had to allow the parachute to rise and float in the air, we had to run off a cliff. It was quite a challenge for me as ran off the cliff. It took me great courage to be able to jump off. In the air, the scenery was breath taking I could see all the three natures on earth, the mountain, the water and the sky. I doubt I would be able to see such a scenery anymore. This truly allowed me to get rid of my height phobia and it was such a a great experience. This was a small little part of what I did during the holidays and I shall share till here only. Hope you enjoyed reading :)
